I’m Leif Given, a lifelong waterman and competitive Formula Kiteboarder on a mission to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. My journey to this stage is built on a foundation of dedication, high-performance training, and a deep understanding of the mental and physical demands of elite competition.
From an early age, I was drawn to the ocean, developing my skills in surfing, windsurfing, and sailing before discovering kiteboarding in 2002. The sport immediately captivated me, combining speed, technical precision, and strategy in a way that no other discipline could.
I began competing early in my career, refining my race tactics and board handling. In 2014, I transitioned to kitefoil racing, where I’ve since dedicated myself to mastering the sport at the highest level. My years of experience across multiple water disciplines provide me with a unique edge, allowing me to adapt and excel in the fast-paced, high-stakes environment of Formula Kiteboarding.
Formula Kiteboarding is a true test of athleticism, endurance, and tactical decision-making, with race speeds exceeding 40 knots. The 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles represent the pinnacle of my career—an opportunity to compete at the highest level and push the boundaries of the sport.
My background in windsurfing, sailing, and freestyle kiteboarding gives me a versatile skillset that enhances my race performance, allowing me to adapt to different conditions and stay ahead of the competition. The mental strength required for elite-level racing is something I continue to refine, both through experience on the water and my academic studies in psychology.
Beyond my athletic career, I have a strong academic background in psychology, which plays a key role in my approach to high-level competition. My education includes:
My studies have given me a deep understanding of mental resilience, performance optimization, and decision-making under pressure—all critical factors in competitive sports. Applying psychological principles to my training allows me to stay focused, manage stress, and maintain peak performance during high-stakes races.
While Formula Kiteboarding and Olympic racing are my primary focus, I am passionate about all kiteboarding disciplines, from big air to wave riding. These styles not only fuel my love for the sport but also serve as valuable cross-training tools, improving my overall balance, board control, and adaptability.
As an IKO-certified instructor, I am committed to teaching and mentoring others in the sport, sharing my knowledge with the next generation of kiteboarders.
The journey to the 2028 Olympics requires world-class training, continuous improvement, and the support of a strong community. I am fully committed to this goal—pushing myself every day to refine my skills, optimize my performance, and compete at the highest level.
